Considerations for scale-up

Scaling up hollow fibre bioreactor capacity for larger productions is straightforward and simply requires one or more incubator shelves in proportion to the number of cells to be cultured. A large incubator equipped with several Duet pumps and cartridges is an affordable way to establish a versatile and high output protein-production facility.

A single DUET pump can support 2 hollow fibre cartridge modules. Different cartridges are available with different capacities. More pumps and cartridges can be added as required. Each cartridge requires around 15 minutes of maintenance per day in the laminar flow cabinet. The Duet pump is designed to run continuously for years without maintenance.

* Signficant variation exists between hybridomas. With process optimization some customers have reported yields of 5mg / ml, i.e. 20 grams per month with the 6-pump set-up indicated above, so the payback time can be very short.
