Scaling-up P. falciparum sporozoite production
Hundreds of millions of sporozoites produced in vitro
A Nature article from 2022 describes the massive scale up of P. falciparum sporozoite production in Small 3.5ml and Medium 20ml size hollow fibre bioreactor cartridges with S2 feeder cells cultured at high density.
Attenuated P. falciparum sporozoites represent a very effective vaccine against malaria with >90% protective efficacy. In the past these vaccines have been derived from mosquitoes. An efficient GMP compliant method for in vitro production is required.
