Long term culture of A549 cells at high density

A compact laboratory hollow fibre culture system provides a convenient way to culture a very large number of cells continuously at high density (> 1e8 cells per ml). This is why, for an R&D laboratory working with incubators, hollow fibre culture is an ideal method for cell culture scale-up. In addition, the stable, 3-D biomimetic conditions for cell growth have led several authors of scientific papers to conclude that hollow fibre represents a more in-vivo like way to culture cells.

Below you can see the daily amount of glucose consumed by a 20ml hollow fibre cartridge used to grow cell line A549. The glucose consumption can easily be calculated using a hand-held glucose meter, e.g. GlucCell. A daily glucose consumption of around 1 gram per day indicates that approximately 1x10e9 cells are using the glucose.
